"Filipinos assist American motor torpedo boats (PT boats) in picking up survivors after Japanese warships were destroyed by forces of the US seventh fleet in the Battle of Surigao Strait. Note the 22.4 inch Mark 13 torpedoes on the torpedo boat. Also visible are twin .50 Browning machine guns and a 40 mm Bofors AA gun. A depth charge rests on the stern." (NAVAL HISTORICAL COLLECTION).

"Nearly 2,000 Filipino evacuees came into the American lines following the invasion of Leyte Island in the Philippines. Some had not eaten for two or three days and were in a bad condition. They said that the Japanese had taken their food and in some instances their clothing. Ample supplies of food were made available to the evacuees as soon as they reached American lines."
